Following the announcement of the new video-on-demand service COW by Cinema On the Web (COW) and DivXNetworks, VideoLAN project team members were informed of a possible breach of VLC Media Player`s license. The VideoLAN project, which owns copyrights on VLC, only markets VLC under the terms of the Gnu General Public License (GNU GPL). This software uses the LAME mp3 library created by LAME developers and owned by LAME developers. The LAME project can be accessed at lame.sourceforge.net. LAME is licensed GNU Library General Public License 2.0 (LGPLv2.0) and the source code may be downloads.yourdolphin.com/downloads/lame-3.98.4.tar.gz therefore no software patent license applies to VideoLAN software. The first licence change for libVLC was completed a few months later in December 2011. This included about 150 developers and 80,000 lines of code.
If a developer has not met the re-license requirement, that developer`s code has been rewritten.3 Then comes the task of contacting the authors of the various modules and modules, focusing on the reading modules in the first place. This was a little more difficult, with about 300 developers and 300,000 lines of code. Kempf was friendly enough to describe his methods in a few blog posts.4 He began with details on how to properly compile the list of names and email addresses and the steps he took to correctly narrow this list in order to remove Dupes, the people who had responded from the first phase of the re-license, and so on. Its response rate for the first emails was only 25%, 25% jumping and 50% not responding. It must have been frustrating, but not entirely surprising. To cope with the remaining 75%, Kempf used a variety of methods that, depending on the perspective, could be described as harassment or ingenious ingenuity; Social media, phone book, Whois Lookups, friends or employees, and showing where they work were all a fair game. (In any case, Kempf can soon be employed as a private investigator…) Kempf also gives a summary of the result and preventive analysis and the answer to the question, “What if I made a mistake?” And let`s not forget all the work associated with changing the information and licensing instructions in each file and elsewhere in the project code and documentation. As I said, perseverance and attention to detail are necessary. Xvid.org has been informed of a possible violation of the GNU GPL license of its own Xvid software. This software uses the VMime library of www.vmime.org commercial license under commercial license, Lesser General Public License version 2.0 (LGPLv3). AMR-WB audio CODEC is licensed by Codepro.
